The Best Place to Celebrate the Lunar New Year? Flushing!

Kick off the Year of the Rat in one of our favorite Queens nabes.

Frigid weather be damned! Thousands descend from their warm apartments every winter to celebrate the Lunar New Year with festivities across all of New York’s Chinatowns. Our favorite place to be during this time of year, though, is Flushing. Here’s where to revere in the Year of the Rat with your entire clan.

See: Colorful Spectacles at the Chinese New Year Parade

Manhattan’s annual processional may be more prominently known for its extravagant displays and firecrackers, but those in the know escape those crowds and head to Queens’s Chinatown festivities. Dragon dancers and steel drummers take over the Flushing streets, as well as local organizations and artists, all embracing this year’s theme. Begins at Union Street and 37th Avenue; 11 a.m.

Feast On: Soup Dumplings at Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao

This recently reopened heavyweight may have upgraded its digs, but its signature dish is just as slurpable as it was before. Order a few rounds of the Lucky Six soup dumplings, served in a colorful array and filled with eccentric ingredients like black truffles and Chinese squash. One Fulton Square, 39-16 Prince Street

Make: Festive Crafts at the Queens Botanical Garden

Perhaps you’re translating this year’s wealthy theme as ecologically prosperous, so consider yourself in the right place. This family-friendly fiesta includes performances and crafts, as well as a “lucky” plant sale, so you can spruce up your home with some greenery for a fraction of the usual cost! 43-50 Main Street; noon–4 p.m.

Warm Up: At Prince Tea House

Seeking a reprieve from all the merriment in the streets? Take a quick walk to this cozy parlor for a spot of tea and some eye-catching sweets. We especially adore the sky-high crepe cakes and pâte à choux stuffed with ice cream! 36-39 Prince Street
