Brooklyn

Happy Birthday to Walt Whitman’s Original Hipster-Brooklyn Beard!

The great poet turns 200 years old today. Here’s where to Whitman-ize your own bushy facial hair and make Walt proud.

Today we wish a very happy birthday to the man who originated the still-going-strong Brooklyn hipster beard…Walt Whitman. That’s right, the 19th-century bard and Brooklynite (he lived in the borough for 28 years, so he was legit) rocked the thick, slightly scraggy, slightly greasy but fully magnificent beard long before organic beard oils were sold at Rite Aid.

Honor the revolutionary poet today (and every day!) by getting your Brooklyn beard on point. Book a facial hair trim and treatment at our favorite Whitman-approved barbershops, then look in the mirror and sing a song of your badass self.

Book a shape-up with one of the many bearded barbers at one of FB’s nine chic locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn—and take home some of its own yummy-smelling products, to boot. Slather them on while you hunker over your MacBook writing rhyming couplets.
