One-Day Vacay: Hiking and Vinyl Browsing in New Paltz

See art. Eat. Hike. Eat. Shop. Eat. Repeat.

At first blush, New Paltz might look like just another sleepy, hippified college town (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but dig a little deeper and you’ll find that the home of one of the best schools in the SUNY system—and the surrounding area—contains multitudes.

DO: Stop on the Way Up at Storm King Art Center

About an hour outside the city, hop out of the car and take a leisurely stroll across this sprawling and gorgeous 500-acre outdoor shrine to some of the best large sculpture in the world. The collection goes far beyond LeWitt and Lichtenstein and will require another day or five to take in all the amazing art. 1 Museum Road, New Windsor

EAT: Lunch at Mountain Brauhaus

Near the lip of the glorious Mohonk Preserve (land of great hiking—more on that soon) sits this family-owned German restaurant with a cozy, ski-lodge vibe. Meat’s the thing here—Sauerbraten! Bratwurst!—but vegetarians will not go hungry, because even the grilled cheese gets dressed up with pears, arugula, and honey-sunflower bread. Whatever you get, you’ll want to pair it with a lager or weiss from the ample beer list. 3123 U.S. 44, Gardiner

DO: Hike It Off at Mohonk Preserve

The fact that Brauhaus is superclose to great hiking trails will become critically important when you limp out of the restaurant in desperate need of cardio. You’re in luck: Access to the West Trapps Trailhead is just a three-minute drive away—and soon enough you’ll be swooning over the sweeping views of the Hudson Valley. 3142 U.S. 44, Gardiner

SHOP: For Sweet Vinyl Records at Jack’s Rhythms

You know how in college you were always browsing in majestically packed record stores where you would find old faves you’d forgotten about, as well as new albums you were curious about? That’s what it’s like at Jack’s, where every nook holds another musical delight. And bonus: Vinyl is hot! 54 Main Street, New Paltz

DRINK AND EAT: Dinner at A Tavola Trattoria

Back in town, you’ll find the best azienda agricola to tavolo Italian dining to be found in New Paltz—and many other places, too. From the stylish but comfortable dark-wood interior of the restaurant and the fresh farfalle to the local produce and locally raised rib eye, A Tavola is the perfect way to cap your 24-hour vacation. Be sure to sample the dynamic house cocktails and well-curated wines. 46 Main Street, New Paltz
