There’s a full slate of beer events and festivals on the docket this month in Chicago, from the venerable Bacon and Beer Classic at Soldier Field and a music-filled anniversary shindig for Marz Brewing to a dog costume contest and even a brewery’s celebration of National Pug Day.
Drink beer for a cause: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s annual craft beer tasting event gives us another reason to feel good about beer consumption. This event is held in the endlessly charming Artifact Events space in Ravenswood, near all the Malt Row breweries, which is ideal because Festivale will feature many of those breweries, such as Band of Bohemia, Dovetail, Half Acre, and more.
Details: October 11, 6:30–10 p.m.; $65 for general admission, $100 for VIP
Mount Prospect Oktoberfest
It’s northwest suburban Mount Prospect’s turn to get in on the German-themed action with a touch of fall festivities. On Saturday,1–4 p.m., take part in family-friendly pumpkin decorating, a trick-or-treat candy line, and hayrides; then, 4–11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, enjoy music from the Phenix German band, German food, and German beers from Hacker Pschorr and Scorched Earth.
Details: October 11 and 12, 4–11 p.m.
2019 Bacon and Beer Classic
There will be 100-plus craft beers from local breweries, unlimited bacon dishes from local restaurants—and it’s at Soldier Field. I’m not sure what else I need to tell you; it’s paradise. Also, there will be live music, games, and a bacon-eating contest, but there is no way you’re still reading this.
Details: October 12, 1–5 p.m.; $59 for general admission, $99 for VIP
Liquid Dreams Festival
Marz Brewing is turning five and throwing a party at its taproom like only the head cholo (aka founder) Ed Marszewski and crew can. They have a lot of buds in the brewing, culinary, and music fields, who will be helping to provide the day’s entertainment. There will also be guest taps from breweries across the country, including newcomer Is/Was Brewing, a saison-focused brewery contracting out of Marz Brewing.
Details: October 12, noon–6 p.m.
Old Town Brew n’ BBQ Fest
Suburban Bloomingdale’s beer game grew over the past couple years with the addition of Wolfden Brewing. Now it is showing off the goods with a festival featuring 40-plus brews from more than 20 Chicagoland breweries, plus barbecue from local vendors and live performances by Black Bolts and the Throwbacks.
Details: October 12, 2–6 p.m.; $40 for drinkers, $10 for designated drivers
4th Annual Arlington On Tap Beer & Wine Fest
They are bringing out some big hitters for this annual tasting event: Half Acre, Revolution, and Maplewood will all be in attendance, as well as nearby Buffalo Creek Brewing from Long Grove. Food will be available for purchase and many wine samples, too—just to give your beer-tasting palate some perspective.
Details: October 12, 5–9 p.m.; $40 for general admission, $50 for VIP
District BOO Yards Dog Costume Contest
Want to see your pup’s likeness on a can of suds? Think your dog is bold enough to be chosen by Bold Dog Beer Company as best in show? Well, find your craziest canine costume and show up to District Brew Yards 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday for a chance to grab your dog’s 15 minutes of fame.
Details: October 12, 1–5 p.m.
Munster Ale Fest
The hometown of 3 Floyds Brewing is throwing a beer fest in the park space on the other side of Calumet Avenue from the brewery (where many of us have parked for Dark Lord Day). It’s a good opportunity to try some less familiar Indiana breweries, like Burn ’Em, 2Toms, and Zorn, plus some exceptional faves such as Misbeehavin Meads, Windmill, and, of course, 3 Floyds itself.
Details: October 12, 1–4:30 p.m.; $47 for general admission, $67 with Gold Pass
Not only is it nice that neighboring breweries Dovetail and Begyle play so well together, it’s also a blast to attend one of their regular block parties, where they shut down the block between them and just get crazy with some food trucks, musical acts, Skee-Ball, Mind Blowing Balloons, and, oh yeah, beer! They usually have a nice beer lineup for these events, and hopefully there will be some of that recent Gold Medal at GABF-winning Barrel Aged Imperial Pajamas to enjoy!
Details: October 12 and 13, noon–10 p.m.; $5 suggested donation to the Friendship Center
2nd Annual National Pug Day Party
Maplewood might be the only place where you’d be thanked for saying, “Wow, your Fat Pug has a nice roasted, sweet chocolate taste. Really goes down smooth, too.” Well, on National Pug Day it will show you why it loves these little critters so much that it named its oatmeal stout after them. Maplewood is closing down the kitchen and calling in all pug lovers and their better halves to the lounge to take a free professional dog portrait and raise money for a local animal rescue organization by just drinking beer. Say hi to Otto for me.
Details: October 14, 11 a.m.–11:59 p.m.
