Any amateur can plan to party all night on New Year’s Eve, but a real night owl can stack back-to-back bashes on the 30th and 31st. You’ve got one last weekend to take the city by the reins in 2017, so why not give it the gusto it deserves at the infamous Players Club?
The Salon is the brainchild of “retro nouveau” producer Patrick Soluri, whose company Prohibition Productions celebrates the Jazz Age era of the 1920s, a time of social and musical upheaval that forever changed popular music, fashion, and cultural mores. Soluri is something of a high priest of the vintage movement; outside of this throwback soiree, he has produced more than 100 concerts and parties for hepcats and fashionable flappers in this year alone.
Soluri’s New Year’s Eve Eve party will fill the stages of all three floors at The Players landmark social club. The night’s activities will include a ballroom for swing dancing hosted by contemporary combo Jason Prover and the Sneak Thievery Orchestra (don’t miss the beginner’s swing lesson at 8 p.m. if you’re afraid you might not have all the right steps); blues swing with King Solomon Hicks Quartet and ragtime pianist Terry Waldo; hot jazz headlined by the enchanting Tamar Korn; and a lower-level bar featuring traditional “gypsy jazz” in the Django Reinhardt tradition from the Adrien Chevalier Jazz Quartet. Additional notable accoutrements include intermission sets from antique phonograph player DJ MAC and regular appearances all night by professional chorines and burlesque performers, who will be roaming the party to spice up the evening.
While spirits will be high and drinks will be available all night, you’ll need to arrive spiffed to the nines to get in; the required fashion rules to enter demand “Mad Men, Gatsby or old-school chic.” Come dressed to impress your grandmother and the night will be yours.
Why You Should Go: This Jazz Age pre–New Year’s Eve bash is one of the holiday’s wildest and best-dressed parties for hipsters of all ages and inclinations.
