The Very Best of L.A.’s Cannabis Culture

Thursday, April 18, 2019
Los Angeles is the unofficial marijuana capital of the U.S., so it’s only right and fair we celebrate its high holiday. Yes, we're talking about 4/20. We’ve weeded through all the goodies (pun intended) and found the very best in cannabis culture for this and every day, from deluxe CBD spa treatments to a private psychedelic tea party with a dress code. 4/20 Events Treat Day With Island + Coolhaus Island is a purveyor of premium, artisanal, non-GMO cannabis prerolled in laid-back Cali-vibes packaging. It is making the experience even sweeter by teaming up with local ice cream company Coolhaus, offering free cult-favorite treats from its truck parked outside, with purchase at a few dispensaries. Field of Dreams, New Amsterdam Naturals, and Green Goddess Collective are all participating. Magic Bus Experience/Kaleidoscope Experience Billed as a “multisensory playground for adults,” this event is packed with a secret pillow fort, meditations and sound baths in its “Cosmic Temple Zen Lounge,” arcade and yard games, magicians, comedians, black-light mini golf, a live band scoring films (Led Zeppelin songs paired with Lord of the Rings; Pink Floyd tunes with Alice in Wonderland), silent laser disco, hoopers, tater tots, and so much more. Oh, and an appearance and performance by Laganja Estranja of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame. Globe Theatre, 740 South Broadway Spas Ritz Carlton Its top-of-the line treatments also includes a nonpsychoactive CBD massage, which starts with a couple drops of tincture under your tongue. Then comes the full body rub, with five different CBD products, including a transdermal patch to take home. 900 West Olympic Boulevard

The Now The Now is a bohemian-style oasis that might seem like a mirage: a quick “spa” that offers a variety of massages starting at $35, with a full menu of add-ons, including CBD. Why not throw a crystal in there, too? No matter which outpost you visit, expect a quality treatment in a space that is beautifully and minimally decorated. Locations throughout Los Angeles Desaur Spa A bath in a copper tub purportedly contains restorative properties due to the metal, and adding CBD to it makes a private luxury soak at Desaur an extremely relaxing experience. 220 West 5th Street Food & Drink White Rabbit High Tea White Rabbit is a premium private club for lovers of the whimsically absurd, and its tea parties are members-only, Alice in Wonderland–themed events for the cannabis-curious set. Sign up to get invited—and sip to get taller, eat to get smaller. Fabulously elegant dress code enforced. PopCultivate Chef’s Table A high-end dining experience that takes culinary craft as seriously as the cannabis experience. Its experimental six-course tasting menus are served straight from the chef’s prep table and come with an optional, responsible (read: low) dose of a proprietary blend of tasteless and odorless THC and CBD infusion. This way, guests are able to craft their high to their own degree. Generally held in downtown’s Arts District, though locations may vary. The Gathering Supper Club Patina alum Sevan Abdessian serves a gorgeous, intimate, five-course Middle Eastern meal infused with a light dose of cannabis, paired with wine. The menu changes every time, though past highlights include hand-rolled cavatelli with verde lamb ragu; roasted parsnips with beet and rose hip reduction; and za’atar-smoked labneh. Location is revealed upon ticket purchase. Dispensaries The Pottery Los Angeles The “stoner vibe” of almost any given dispensary can be a bit off-putting; luckily, there’s the Pottery, which feels more like a minimalist lifestyle boutique and contemporary apothecary, with home accessories right alongside its design-focused smoking glassware and the premium flower to go in it. 5042 Venice Boulevard

MedMen A visit to a cannabis dispensary can be a bit overwhelming, to say the least, for newbies and dabblers. That’s why this chain—known as the “Apple store of dispensaries” for its aesthetic and approach—is a godsend. The experience here offers an up-close interaction with all product (smelling only, no sampling), whereas most dispensaries keep it hidden behind a counter. Plus, interactive browsing tablets allow for further research and great navigation to exactly what you’re looking for. Various locations throughout Los Angeles Firehaus Deemed a gold-standard dispensary by many marijuana connoisseurs, this spot offers the best of the best—not just favorites, but also incredibly beautiful and exclusive handcrafted edibles and body products and hard-to-find pens. In the mood for a white chocolate bar with pistachios, champagne, and the good stuff? How about a cannabis-infused Sauvignon Blanc? Then this is your place. 2000 Cotner Avenue
