An Evening of Tim Gunn, Storytelling, and Ice Cream Cake

Make. It. Work.

From the very first time I heard Tim Gunn utter what would become his signature catchphrase on Project Runway, I was hooked—not just on the addictive, groundbreaking show, but on its debonair co-host. In a sea of stressed out, frenzied fashion designers, he was the calm voice of reason. From showing contestants how the tiniest tweak could transform their designs to his refreshingly honest but gentle guidance, I couldn’t help but think how much I could use his advice in my own life.

And surely I wasn’t the only one who wanted Gunn to be their personal mentor. As the show took off, so did Gunn. He wasn’t just a teacher at Parsons School of Design—which was already impressive. He made a name for himself with his candid take on the fashion industry (would anyone else spill juicy anecdotes about Anna Wintour?), becoming an Emmy winner and a New York Times bestselling author.

Now we can hear his tales in person when Gunn joins the monthly storytelling event Yum’s the Word, hosted by Robin Gelfenbien at (le) poisson rouge. Also taking the mic during that night’s showcase are Constance Shulman from Orange is the New Black, Comedy Central’s Gastor Almonte, and Moth Story SLAM Winner Danny Artese. Try not to laugh while chowing down on your complimentary ice cream cake and old-school candy served up by Gelfenbien (has there ever been a better combo?). Oh, and just in case, there are Lactaid pills available on hand. Yes, really. But as we all know, you can make it work.

Why You Should Go: Who wouldn’t want to be eating homemade ice cream cake while watching Tim Gunn telling his personal tales?
