Award-Worthy Street Eats

The best of the city’s food vendors all in one place? At the Vendy Awards, it’s possible!

In the past decade, the fare from food trucks and sidewalk carts has been elevated from “street meat” to world-class cuisine. And at Governors Island one weekend every year, the hungriest come out en masse to honor (and sample) some of the city’s best at the all-you-can-eat gathering proudly called the Vendy Awards.

Now in its 13th year, 2017’s lineup of finalists competing for “the Oscars of street food” spans the culinary globe. Sure, you can expect glorified sandwiches made out of French toastquesadillas stuffed with comfort classics, and artisanal Twinkies. Some of the best culinary options, though, come from places like Malaysia, Indonesia, Persia, and Flushing.

Regardless of origin, everything is expected to be delicious and send you into a once-in-a-blue-moon food coma. Plus, it’s for a great cause. Most of the proceeds directly benefit the Street Vendor Project, a nonprofit  that continuously fights for the rights of food vendors satisfying the appetites of New York’s foodies.
